Chicho (en español abajo)
One thing I love about photography is that the viewer gets to interpret the photos they see. It doesn't matter what the intent of the photo was or if the interpretation is correct, photos hit people differently. When I took this one I didn't give much thought about it until I was editing them. I now have this photo poster size hanging on my office wall because it definitely hits me hard. So how do I interpret this photo?
On the surface I see a popular professional athlete giving thanks before a game. As I thought about it more though I started to see much more. This isn't just an athlete, but a man. I see on his face that he knows that he is just a man. This man is humbling himself before his creator to give thanks for his talents and abilities. Maybe he asks for health and safety for all those that play the game or perhaps he is simply silencing out the noise of the stadium and the fame in order to get into a better head space for the game. His hands held in acceptance; for whatever happens in life he is ready to accept it. His face appears sincere in thought like nothing in the world is going to deter him. Even with that I see doubts on his face that he is confronting. The "family" tattoo on his left knee speaks to me and tells me that this man doesn't just play because he loves the game, but that he plays for something bigger than himself. His family is important to him and the reason he works his ass off. I wish I could see what the right knee tattoo says, but the fact that I can't tells me that there are always things you won't know about people and that sometimes the private lives of athletes need to remain private and unseen. I'm sure at times Chicho just wants to be Cristian Arango. I'll probably never get to meet Chicho Arango, but this photo has impacted my life in ways he won't ever understand. Even if I do meet Chicho I don't think I'd ask him to tell me about this because I like the interpretation we can all come up with on our own.

Una cosa que me encanta de la fotografía es que el espectador puede interpretar las fotos que ve. No importa cuál haya sido la intención de la foto o si la interpretación es correcta, las fotos golpean a las personas de manera diferente. Cuando tomé este, no lo pensé mucho hasta que lo estaba editando. Ahora tengo esta foto tamaño póster colgada en la pared de mi oficina porque definitivamente me impacta mucho. Entonces, ¿cómo interpreto esta foto?
En la superficie veo a un atleta profesional popular dando las gracias antes de un partido. A medida que lo pensaba más, comencé a ver mucho más. Esto no es solo un atleta, sino un hombre. Veo en su rostro que sabe que es solo un hombre. Este hombre se está humillando ante su creador para dar gracias por sus talentos y habilidades. Tal vez pide salud y seguridad para todos los que juegan o tal vez simplemente está silenciando el ruido del estadio y la fama para tener un mejor espacio mental para el juego. Sus manos se sostenían en señal de aceptación; pues pase lo que pase en la vida, está dispuesto a aceptarlo. Su rostro parece sincero en sus pensamientos como si nada en el mundo fuera a disuadirlo. Incluso con eso veo dudas en su rostro que está enfrentando. El tatuaje de "familia" en su rodilla izquierda me habla y me dice que este hombre no solo juega porque ama el juego, sino que juega para algo más grande que él. Su familia es importante para él y la razón por la que trabaja duro. Me gustaría poder ver lo que dice el tatuaje de la rodilla derecha, pero el hecho de que no pueda me dice que siempre hay cosas que no sabrás sobre las personas y que, a veces, la vida privada de los atletas debe permanecer privada e invisible. Estoy seguro que a veces Chicho solo quiere ser Cristian Arango. Probablemente nunca llegue a conocer a Chicho Arango, pero esta foto ha impactado mi vida de una manera que él nunca entenderá. Incluso si me encuentro con Chicho, no creo que le pida que me cuente sobre esto porque me gusta la interpretación que podemos hacer todos por nuestra cuenta.
